Brett Maxie joined the Saints in 1985 after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Southern University. Once a quarterback in college, a coaching change led him to switch sides of the ball and become a defensive back. He quickly established himself as a key contributor in the Saints’ secondary, known for his hard-hitting style and ability to make plays on the ball. During his time with the Saints, Maxie became known for his leadership on and off the field. He was respected by teammates and coaches for his football IQ and work ethic, serving as a mentor to younger players. In New Orleans, Maxie appeared in 118 games with 72 starts, recording 438tackles, 15 interceptions returned for three touchdowns, three sacks and five fumble recoveries. Maxie was part of the first Saints playoff team and the winningest season in franchise history up to that point, going 12-3 in 1987. He went on to be an integral part of a Saints defense that four times ranked in the top five in the NFL in points allowed (1987-88, 1991-92), including ranking number one twice (1991-92), while reaching the playoffs four times.
