Meet The Saints Legend Michael Lewis

Michael Lewis, also known as “the Beer Man”, is recognized as one of the best special teams players to ever play for the Saints. Lewis started his professional football career relatively late, joining the Saints at the age of 29 after spending time in the Arena and Canadian Football Leagues. Despite his unconventional path, Lewis quickly became a fan favorite in New Orleans due to his electrifying play as a return specialist. In six seasons with the Black and Gold, Lewis holds franchise records in punt return yards (1,482), punt return average (10.4), kick return yards (5,903) and kick return touchdowns(three). In 2002,“the Beer Man” was selected First Team All-Pro and chosen as a Pro Bowler after leading the league in punt return yards (625), kick return yardage (1,807) and all-purpose yards (2,647). One of the most memorable moments of Lewis’ career came on Oct. 13, 2002 against the Washington Redskins, when he became the seventh player in NFL history and first in Saints history to record both kickoff and punt return touchdowns in a single game. In addition to his contributions on special teams, Lewis occasionally saw playing time as a wide receiver, providing depth and versatility to the Saints’ offense. Overall, Michael Lewis left a lasting mark on the Saints organization and is remembered as one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
